The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is raising awareness about the dangers of toppling furniture and televisions, a serious safety issue in Australian homes.
Toppling furniture and televisions
Toppling furniture and televisions cause injuries and deaths in Australia. Since 2000, at least 27 people have died and many more have been injured. Children under the age of 5 are most at risk.
The majority of deaths have involved storage furniture such as chests of drawers and bookshelves, televisions, and the furniture on which televisions are placed. A much broader range of furniture types have caused injuries, such as tables, desks and chairs.
The safety risk is due to a combination of design factors and consumer behaviours. Many people do not realise the safety risks, and don't receive appropriate safety guidance or anchoring kits.
How to help prevent toppling incidents:
Whether you’re a buyer, seller, or just setting up your home, here are some simple tips to help prevent furniture and TV tip-overs:
- Secure furniture and TVs to the wall using anchors or brackets.
- Place heavier items in the lowest drawers or shelves.
- Avoid putting toys, remotes, or other tempting items on top of tall furniture.
- Supervise young children around large or unstable furniture.
- Choose low, wide furniture with a stable base when possible.
Selling or buying second-hand furniture?
If you're listing or purchasing items on Gumtree, it helps to think about safety too. Sellers can mention whether anchoring kits are included, or suggest buyers secure items once home. Including a quick safety note in your listing can show responsibility and help protect others, especially families with young children.
