1. What is KYC and why do I need to complete it?

KYC means "Know Your Customer". and is a process that establishes customer identity, understands their activities, and validates that the funds are legitimate. We use this process through our secure payment service provider, Adyen, to help protect our customers against fraud.

KYC requires you to enter your driver's licence or passport numbers, address, date of birth, and access to your bank details.

2. What types of identification are accepted?

You can use any government-issued photo identification, including your driver's licence or passport.

3. Why must I provide my personal information?

In accordance with our legal obligations, our secure partner Adyen must verify sellers' identities and bank account details in order to permit you to receive money on Gumtree.

Adyen is a payment service provider which enables our customers to safely and securely send and receive payments on the Gumtree platform.

Your information is kept confidential, and Gumtree is not involved in handling your money. By using Gumtree Pay, you agree to Adyen's Terms and Conditions, and become Adyen's client. This way, your money and information is safe.

If you wish to delete your personal details from Gumtree, please contact our Community Support. Information stored with our payments provider, Adyen, is required for legal compliance.

4. Can I still pay the old fashioned way with cash upon pickup instead of Gumtree Pay?

Currently, you are able to complete transactions using the payment method of your choice. However, we recommend using Gumtree Pay as seller and buyer details are tracked and linked to your transaction to improve your safety.

5. Why was my verification unsuccessful?

Please ensure you have correctly entered the details from your government identification, bank account, address and date of birth. Also double check that you have entered your name exactly as it appears on your government identification.

In order to receive your payouts, we need to verify your bank account. The bank account must be in your name and it must be located in the country where you live.

You can verify your bank account instantly by accessing your online bank account when promoted during the verification process. Alternatively, you can manually provide your bank account details by uploading a bank statement. This method may take a few hours or days.

6. How do I access my money? When will I be paid?

In your Gumtree Messages within the conversation with the buyer, you will see a "Request Payment" button at the top.

You will be prompted to 'Get started with Gumtree Payments' and you will need to fill in your name and agree to our payment service provider Adyen's Terms and Conditions.

You will be prompted to set up two-factor authentication via your mobile phone as an added layer of security on your account.

Once you have agreed on a price and pick up details with the buyer, you may enter an amount to request.

Click the "Gumtree Pay Settings" button at the top of the conversation with the buyer and you may be prompted to enter your KYC details if you haven't previously done so.

Payouts can normally take 2-3 business days to arrive in your bank account, and on occasion may take a few extra days.

7. Are there fees on top of the agreed price between buyer and seller?

Please see our Gumtree service fees page for more information.

8. I'm having trouble entering an amount / I'm receiving an error message

You can enter an amount with dollars and cents separated by a decimal, and no other characters will be permitted.

If you receive an error ensure the amount being entered is between the minimum of $10 and the maximum of $10,000.

9. Can I pay a deposit or a partial amount? How do I pay the remaining balance?

A buyer and seller can discuss and agree to pay a deposit or partial amount. The seller will then need to create a new payment request for the remaining balance.

10. Why was my payout unsuccessful?

Your bank account may not have been properly verified. Be sure to double check the bank account number and BSB for accuracy, and  update if necessary. The verification process may take a few days if it's your first time being verified and receiving money.

Ensure you have completed the KYC process. Please note, payouts can take up to 5 business days to arrive in your bank account.

Double check with your bank if you are experiencing issues with entering your bank account details.

11. Information about payment cancellations

A seller will be notified when a buyer's payment is complete. If the seller cancels the payment request, the buyer will not be able to complete the transaction.

Sellers have the ability to cancel a payment request by clicking the "Cancel Request" button at the top of the chat with the buyer. If a buyer has already completed payment, then there is no option to cancel.

Please contact Community Support if you need assistance.

12. Information about Refunds

We require buyers to confirm they've inspected an item before continuing the payment process. If there is an issue with the item not being sent or it is not as described, please contact the seller to discuss a resolution.
