Verifying your number on Gumtree



To help keep Gumtree safe for everyone, we ask all users to verify their mobile number. This adds an extra layer of security and helps reduce spam across the platform.

When do I verify?

You’ll be prompted to verify your Australian mobile number:

  • When registering a new Gumtree account
  • When changing your account phone number
  • Occasionally, if your account has been inactive for a long time

How it works:

  • Enter your valid Australian mobile number when prompted.
  • We’ll send you a 6-digit verification code via SMS.
  • Enter that code within 3 minutes to complete verification.

Once verified, your number is securely linked to your account.

Changing your number:

You can update your mobile number anytime from your Profile Settings. When you do, you’ll receive a new OTP on the new number to verify it.

Didn’t receive the SMS code?

Try the following:

  • Double-check that your mobile number is entered correctly (Australian mobile numbers only. Landlines, VoIP, and international numbers are not supported).
  • Make sure your phone can receive SMS messages.
  • Try turning your phone off and on again or moving to an area with stronger reception.

If it still doesn’t arrive, wait a few minutes and tap Resend Code.

Note:
If you request the code too many times, you’ll see this message: "You have reached the maximum number of requests. Please try again later."
In that case, please wait 24 hours before trying again.

Unsupported Numbers

The following types of numbers won’t work for verification:

  • Landlines
  • VoIP or virtual numbers
  • International numbers
  • Numbers already linked to a different Gumtree account
